Forty five minutes of punching, kicking and kneeing pads and heavy bags, in a room full of people who were all beginners once.
Fitness kickboxing at Chau Kaizen is built for the person who wants a hard, interesting workout without signing up to fight anyone. You will build strength, co-ordination, fitness and a fair bit of confidence, and you will leave a good deal of the day’s stress on the bag.
No sparring. No contact between members. Just pads, bags and coaching, from a gym that has been teaching martial arts in Adelaide since 2003.
Why people keep coming back
It does not feel like cardio
You are learning a jab, a round kick, a combination. The conditioning arrives while you are busy concentrating on something else.
It is a genuine release
Hitting a heavy bag properly is one of the more honest ways to get a bad day out of your system.
It fits a real week
Forty five minutes, six times a week, early mornings and after work. In and out without losing your evening.
What a 45 minute class looks like
- 0–5 min. Warm up and striking fundamentals.
- 6–16 min. Rounds on the heavy bags.
- 16–36 min. Focus pads and kick pads with a partner.
- 36–45 min. A strong conditioning finisher on the bags or pads.

Who these classes are for
Complete beginners who have never thrown a punch. Parents fitting a session in while the kids are at school. Shift workers who need a 6am. People coming back after years off, and people who used to train and miss it.
You do not need to be fit to start, and you do not need to keep up with anyone. Every round has an easier version and a harder version, and the coaches will show you both. The person next to you is far more interested in their own bag than in you.
If you catch the bug and want to take striking further, our MMA Striking classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings are the next step.

- Fitness Kickboxing
- Boxing gloves and wraps. We have loan gloves if you do not have your own.

- A drink bottle, a towel, short nails, and thongs or slides for walking off the mats.
Comfortable training clothes are fine for your first class. You only need your own gear once you are training regularly.

What our members say
My son (now 6 years old) joined (at 5 years old) just over a year ago originally just for BJJ classes. He loves it so much that he does the MMA classes offered to the kids ages 6 to 8 years too. We're at Chau Kaizen 3 (sometimes 4) afternoons a week. Coaches are friendly and attentive. The kids classes…
Your coach
Classes are led by Suasday Chau, who has taught martial arts in Adelaide for more than 27 years. Before Brazilian Jiu Jitsu he trained and competed in Muay Thai, Karate, Judo and Tang Soo Do, and went on to fight professionally in mixed martial arts, including for ONE Championship.
He also holds Certificate IV qualifications in fitness and personal training. What that means for a beginner is simple: the person teaching you to kick has spent far longer learning how to teach it safely than how to do it. Read Suasday’s full story.
Memberships
Fitness kickboxing is included in our standard adult memberships, alongside BJJ and MMA, so you are never locked into one class. See the memberships page for prices.
Chau Kaizen takes 25% off all memberships for veterans and emergency services personnel. The discount applies to both adult and kids memberships, and extends to immediate family members only. Proof of service or eligibility is required. Chau Kaizen is trusted by the Australian Army to deliver Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training.
Common questions
Do I need to be fit to start?
No. Every round has an easier and a harder version and the coaches will show you both. Fitness is what the class builds.
Is there any sparring?
No. Fitness Kickboxing has no sparring and no contact between members. It is pads, bags and coaching. If you want sparring, that is what MMA Striking is for.
I have never done martial arts before. Will I be lost?
No. Most people in the room started exactly where you are. Techniques are broken into steps and the coaches correct you as you go.
What do I need to buy?
Boxing gloves and wraps are required. We can loan you a pair of gloves for your trial class and help you buy your own when you join.
Can I do kickboxing and BJJ on the same membership?
Yes. One membership covers all three programs. The price depends on how often you train, not which class you pick.
Is it suitable for teenagers?
Yes, from age 14. Children aged 6 to 13 train in the kids classes instead.
