Chau Kaizen runs kids martial arts classes Monday to Thursday afternoons at Prospect, 10 minutes from the Adelaide CBD. Children train in two age groups, learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA, and start with a free trial class. Most kids who walk in have never done a martial art before.
Two age groups, two class times
- Ages 6 to 8 train from 4:30pm to 5:00pm, Monday to Thursday. Thirty minutes suits the attention span, and it keeps the after-school run short.
- Ages 9 to 13 train from 5:00pm to 5:45pm, Monday to Thursday.
Monday and Wednesday are Kids MMA. Tuesday and Thursday are Kids BJJ No Gi. Once a child turns 14 they move into the adult classes, which run straight after.
What your child actually does in class
Classes are structured and supervised from the first minute to the last: a warm-up that burns off the school day, a technique the coach breaks into steps, then drilling that technique with a partner. Kids BJJ is grappling based, so it is about control, balance and position rather than striking each other. Kids MMA builds movement and striking mechanics using heavy bags and pads.
Every kids class also includes live sparring in a controlled setting, from the youngest group up. That is deliberate. A child who has only ever practised techniques in the air freezes under pressure, while a child who has worked with a partner who is genuinely resisting, with a coach watching every pair, is ready if they ever need it. Intensity is managed, partners are matched by size and stage, and control comes before everything else.

Old-school values. Modern martial arts.
At Chau Kaizen we combine traditional discipline and respect with modern martial arts training. Most parents come to us for one of four things: a child who needs to move more, a child who needs more confidence, a child who needs to listen better, or a child who needs a group that is not a screen. Martial arts is unusually good at all four, because progress is visible, effort is rewarded in front of everyone, and there is nowhere to hide behind a device for 30 to 45 minutes.
Is it safe?
Classes are age-grouped, supervised throughout, and taught with technique and control before intensity. Classes are capped at 20 children and we aim for one coach to every 10. Every coach holds a current Working With Children Check and a police clearance.
Watching your child train
Parents are welcome to stay and watch the first class. From the second class on we ask you to drop and go. Children concentrate on the coach when a parent is not in the room, and the ones who keep looking to the side for reassurance are the ones who learn slowest. Forty-five minutes is a short coffee, and they will tell you all about it in the car.
What your child needs to wear
Comfortable sports clothes are fine to start with, with no zips or pockets. Kids BJJ No Gi needs shorts or leggings and a fitted shirt or rash guard. We will tell you what to buy if your child decides to stay, and there is no need to spend anything before the free trial.
