You Do Not Need to Get Fit First
The most common reason people give for not starting martial arts is that they need to get fit first. After 27 years of coaching, here is why that is backwards.
After 27 years of coaching, I can tell you the most common reason people give for not starting martial arts, or not coming back to it. It is not time. It is not money. It is this:
“I need to get fit first.”
MMA, BJJ, Fitness Kickboxing, it does not matter which one. Same line every time. And I always answer the same way.
1. You get fit while learning and doing
Nobody walks in ready. The fitness is built on the mats, not before you step on them. Every drill, every round, every class does the work for you. You just have to be in the room.
2. Very little of what you do outside will prepare you for this
Running and gym work will help a bit physically, but martial arts fitness is its own thing. What matters far more is the mental side. Turning up when you are tired. Staying calm when you are uncomfortable. Trying again after you get it wrong. You cannot build that on a treadmill. You only build it by being here.
So I ask you, if not now, when?
There is no destination to overthink. There is no level you need to hit before you are allowed to walk through the door. Come have some fun. Learn something that is physically demanding, completely satisfying and, for a lot of the people who train here, life changing.
Which class should you start with?
All of them.
Some days you will want to hit something. Other days you will want to choke someone. It is all fun, and it is all here.
Your first class is free. book a free trial class, turn up, and let the fitness sort itself out.
See you on the mats.
