Strong enough to be gentle

Does martial arts make you aggressive? No. Here’s why the strongest people on the mats are the gentlest.

People hear “martial arts” and picture aggression. Fighting. Someone looking for trouble.

I’ve been coaching for 27 years. It’s the opposite. The people who train the longest are the calmest in the room. They’ve got nothing to prove. They get tested on the mats every week.

Be strong enough to be gentle.

That’s what we teach.

What this looks like at Chau Kaizen

Every class runs on one rule. Look after your training partners.

Kids learn confidence, not how to be the bully. They learn to stand tall, set boundaries and protect themselves. They also learn the strongest kid in class looks after the others. Kids classes are for ages 6 to 13.

Adults come in to switch off and train hard. BJJ, MMA or Fitness Kickboxing, you walk out calmer than you walked in.

Nobody here is out to hurt you. Nobody is here to show off.

What the mats teach you

In BJJ your hands are on someone every class. You could hurt them. You don’t.

They tap, you let go. Straight away. No extra squeeze. That trust is what makes the room work. If you can’t look after your partners, nobody will want to train with you. And if you don’t follow instructions to train with more control, you’ll be asked to leave.

MMA is the same. You learn to hit hard, and you learn when to hold back with someone newer than you.

And you get humbled. Someone smaller, younger or newer will catch you. You tap, shake hands and go again. Ego doesn’t last long on the mats. That’s a good thing.

Gentle is a choice only the strong get to make

Gentle with no other option isn’t gentle. It’s all you’ve got.

If you can’t defend yourself, you back down because you have to. You’ve got no choice. That’s not gentle. That’s fear.

Training changes that. Once you know you can handle yourself, you don’t need to prove it. Now gentle is your choice. Walking away when someone at the pub wants trouble. Not biting when someone pushes your buttons. Not needing to be the loudest in the room.

That’s not weak. That’s control, and it’s the hardest thing we teach. Strength & Honour. It’s on our wall for a reason.

Strong also means being gentle with yourself. Talk to a mate. Put your hand up when you’re not okay. That takes more guts than any fight.

The stories I hear

Parents tell me all the time about their kids standing up to bullies at school. Most walked away. A few had to get physical, and defended themselves well enough that the bullies learnt their lesson. Nothing has happened since.

Adults tell me the same story in a different way. On the toughest days, at work, at home, in life, they come to class. During and after it, the chaos settles and everything feels better.

They never regret coming. They only regret the classes they missed.

That’s the real lesson. The days you don’t want to come are the days you’ll get the most out of it. Not just physically. Mentally, internally, spiritually.

Come and see for yourself

Think you’re not tough enough? Worried it’s all ego? Come in and find out.

Your first class is on us. Book your free trial class online before you come in, so we know to expect you and can have a coach ready for you.

If not now, when?

See you on the mats.
